Book Review: Lights Out-Sleep, Sugar and Survival

Lights Out -Sleep, Sugar and Survival by T.S. Wiley with Bent Formby, Ph.D.

Lights Out is a must-read for anyone seriously looking to fix their ill health, have more energy, avoid weight gain, regulate hormones, prevent cancer and basically live a healthy, balanced life.  I’m pretty sure that covers just about ALL of us!

The science of sleep is a topic that is VASTLY ignored in our culture and yet we all know intuitively that it’s a problem.  Coffee and energy drink addictions, cracking soda after soda just to stay awake at the job, afternoon carb cravings and crashes, and drugs to help us get to sleep when we can’t turn off our brain no matter how exhausted we are, the list goes on and on. This is a topic that I will be exploring in much greater detail in future articles.  For anyone who is looking to feel better, look better, and perform better NOW, I strongly encourage you to pick up this book!

Lights Out addresses the scientific link that sleep (or lack thereof) has with obesity, diabetes, hypertension, mental health and cancer, and proposes the natural solutions on how to get back to the quality and quantity of sleep our bodies are designed to perform on.

One thing that I did find frustrating is that because the book takes its time presenting a great deal of theory and posturing on how lights have created eternal sun and the ways it has changed us, separating us forever from our natural background, and the societal structures that has doomed us to our lackluster sleep habits, it takes a long time before it gets into the hard science of sun, hormones, sugar and sleep.  It does eventually get there, and it’s well worth the read, but you have to be prepared to push through the background of the policies and practices that got us into the mess we’re in.  I believe these are incredibly valuable insights, but I feel the book may lose readers that are interested in a solution if they can’t tolerate the story of the path that lead us to the pickle we’re in, and the prescription for getting out of it.  When it does get into the practical matter of sleep disturbance, I think it hits a home run.

Sit down, strap in, and prepare to get the best sleep of your life!

Have you read Lights Out?  What practices have you implemented to help change the way you sleep?  What differences have you noticed since you changed your sleep habits?  Let us know and share the love!
